MSO Home - Services List - A34

Here are details on the services on the A34, starting at Winchester and ending at Oxford. Feel free to contact me with any corrections, photos or opinions.

Also on Motorway Services Online: Services on the M3, M4 and the M40.

Sutton Scotney

Location: Between Winchester and Whitchurch, Hampshire, SO21 3JY. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Facilities: Little Chef (including toilets), Shell, Travelodge
Services type: Two sites located between junctions, with no public connection between them.

Notes: These services were planned to be a Little Chef for quite a while, to replace a site at Privett demolished during roadworks. By the time the plans started to materialise, Little Chef's owners Trusthouse Forte had acquired Welcome Break, so they included a Welcome Break shop and separate toilets within the plans for the services. The services opened in 1986 as a Little Chef but with smaller Welcome Break signs below, and it was supposed to be a sign of grander things for a-road services. Instead the services never really took off and a Burger King has since closed.

When Trusthouse Forte and their owners Granada were forced to sell Welcome Break, Sutton Scotney was one of the few services which didn't need to be sold, so it was branded as Granada until Moto came along who sold the site.

Tot Hill

Location: Between Whitchurch and Newbury, Berkshire, RG20 9ED. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Facilities: Little Chef, McDonalds Drive Thru, Shell, Travelodge
Services type: Single site located at a junction.

Notes: The newest services on the A34, Tot Hill was built as part of the Newbury Bypass in 1996.

Chieveley

This service area is also accessible to traffic on the M4 and so it is documented on the motorway services section of the site.

Chilton

Southbound only, no HGVs.
Location: Between Newbury and Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 ORW. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Facilities: Murco
Services type: Single site located between junctions on the southbound side only.

Notes: The services consist only of a filling station.

Didcot

Location: At Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX14 4TX. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Also accessible to traffic on the A4130.
Facilities: McDonalds Drive Thru, BP, Premier Inn, Table Table (The Apple Cart) Pub-Restaurant
Services type: Single site located at a junction.

Notes: Actually located off the A4130, the McDonalds is a very short distance from the rest of the services and has quite a complicated car park layout.

Oxford Peartree

No HGVs.
Location: Between Oxford and Kidlington, Oxfordshire, OX2 8JZ. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Also accessible to traffic on the A40 and the A44.
Facilities: Little Chef (including toilets), Burger King, Shell, Travelodge, Holiday Inn
Services type: Single site located at a junction.

Notes: The services were built by Trusthouse Forte in the 70s and then transferred to Granada in 1996. It was quite an upmarket service area with the first Granary restaurant and a carvery, and the walls down to the basement toilets being lined with carpet. It also had two hotels, a budget hotel and a slightly more upmarket one, and it was the first service area with a Little Chef alongside it, which was housed in a prefab-type building opposite the main building. Today it isn't quite as luxurious and looks run-down.

Family Farm

Location: Between Kidlington and Wendlesbury, Oxfordshire, OX25 3QQ. [Google Maps linkOpen link in a new window]

Facilities: Little Chef, BP Connect (northbound only), Shell (southbound only)
Services type: Three services (one northbound, two southbound) staggered accross the carriageway with no public access between them.

Notes: The first of the two southbound services consists of only a Shell with lots of room for expansion, whereas the second one houses a Little Chef, several houses and a derelict independent petrol station.
